16" x 22"

This is an Mbuti design, from Zaire. The Mbuti are the only tribe of African pygmies which has art or ornamentation apart from body decoration. Such designs are normally painted onto a kind of fibrous cloth made of beaten plant materials. The word pygmy first appears in Homer's Odyssey; it means a cubit in height. This artwork was accepted into a prestigious touring exhibition in Japan in 1999, and was shown in Tokyo and Osaka.
