EMERGENT KNOT OF LEONARDO
15" x 21"

This is a traditional lute rose known as the "knot of Leonardo" in the belief that Leonardo da Vinci originated it. While Leonardo is known to have dawn knotwork designs it is doubtful that he invented this one. This rose is found on many historical lutes by 16th century makers such as Michielle Harton (Padua), Hans Burkholtzer (Fussen), and Wendelio Venere (Padua). The full pattern comprises of some 1,300 cut lines, each representing several cutting strokes.
