Dreadnought Model

The Dreadnought is the crown jewel of the Martin Guitar Company line and is the most familiar and copied shape of acoustic guitar in the world today. The Dreadnought was originally developed in the late 1920's for musicians who stood while they played, and provided chord accompaniment to singing. It is even today most often used with a strap to hold it up and, as such, its physical balance does not matter very much: it is neck-heavy. Combined with its characteristic shallow waist, this feature can make the Dreadnought an awkward guitar to play in sitting position: it wants to slide around and move too much. The Dreadnought has long been the guitar of choice by bluegrass flatpickers.
