12" x 18" x 3"

Rosette after a pattern by Wendelio Venere, Padua, l6l9. From an instrument in the Brussels Museum of Instruments. This pattern is also to be found in a lute by George Gerle, C. l580, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. One can see in this design how indebted European Renaissance artists were to the world of Islamic sensibility. Lute rosettes such as this one were often carved by German wood carving guilds and the sent to Italian luthiers, in an efficient pre-industrial age division of labor. Carved into bookmatched red cedar, with velvet backing. This piece of wood has some 260 annular lines: it was alive 60 years before the French Revolution.
